A Friend's Question...Brushing Toddler's Teeth

This time I'm asking a question for my friend, Stasha. She was wondering all the ins and outs of brushing toddler's teeth (do you use toothpaste? how much? how often do you brush their teeth? how in the would do you keep their mouths open?). Her baby boy is 11 months old and has 6 or more teeth. Thanks :)

  1. Abbey...thanks for your comment on my blog. You'll have to let me know how Kate does her second night. Last night was our third night and Saige didn't make a peep until 3 AM (put to bed at 7 PM). I fed her and then she slept until around 6:45 (7:45 with time change). I think i'll probably continue to feed her once a night for another couple months. What does sleep sense say about feeding in the night at 6 months? I read on her blog that most babies no longer need a feeding as early as 4 months.

  2. oh just a note about teeth brushing. As soon as my kids got their first tooth I bought a tooth brush that I let them chew on before bed...just to get them used to it. I also would use a wash cloth to wipe their teeth off when they had a few more teeth. None of my kids seemed to mind it because they love having stuff in their mouth...again, the earlier you start the easier it will be. Eventually I would use that "training toothpaste" orajel makes it. It tastes good but they can swallow it, so they didn't fight the toothbrush as much with that stuff on it.

  4. There is toothpaste out there that is safe for babies to swallow. Tyler would ask for it sometimes! Also get a stage 1 toothbrush. It has softer bristles so it is perfect for their young gums and teeth.
