OK, I have to pick your brains again...my babe had her 4 month doctor's appointment a couple weeks ago, and the doc said that I could start her on rice cereal or baby oatmeal. What the heck is this stuff? Do you put it in a bottle? Is it best to mix it with: breast milk, formula, or water? What's the ratio??? When during the day and night do you give the rice cereal or milk? Do some of you think I shouldn't give it at all? Right now I give her breast milk and formula... you thoughts?
You sound just like me when it comes to questions. Funny thing is, you'll figure it out and then new moms will ask you the same questions. I mix it with milk or water. (Saige prefers b milk). Watch out though, cause the rice especially is constipating. I only give oatmeal. Put a little of the dry stuff in a bowl and then add some liquid until it's pretty runny, make it thicker as she gets older. Give it to her whenever either of you are bored :)
ReplyDeleteAbbs, I know I don't have kids yet, but I learned in my classes in college that the rice cereal/oatmeal keeps them fuller longer and is best if you give it to them at night before bed. That's just an education perspective though.
ReplyDeletePS when you're first starting out, they recommed nursing your baby first and then offering food in order to keep your milk supply. for example, When saige wakes up from a nap, if I think she's hungry I"ll nurse her like I normally would. Then a little later I'll mix some ceareal (or at this point I give her baby food from a jar too) and see if she's hungry. Saige is a month older than kate, but she still eats only teaspoons of food each day.
ReplyDeleteAgreed with Lisa. Ada doesn't eat that much and I am being bad probably cause I am not consistent right now. I kind of just wanted to see if she would like it and she did!! Ha. My doc said that we could start too, but encouraged us to wait until 6 months. She was just so interested in our food and would watch us so carefully while we ate.
ReplyDeleteSorry I couldn't be of more help!! She is a doll, though!
Rice cereal is a good introductory to other solid foods like sweet potatoes and squash. We've tried it a few times with Hannah and she really loves it. I think you and I should have rice cereal parties with our two beauties!
