My baby girl is 4 1/2 months old. She has been sleeping swaddled, in her swing. It's been perfect, because if she wakes up from a little noise, the swing will rock her right back to sleep. I know she can't stay in the swing forever, so I'd like her to get used to her crib. I put her in the crib for about three weeks, but I got NO sleep! It was like she was a newborn again. When she is in her crib she wakes up and cannot get back to sleep. I let her cry 30 minutes one night and 45 the next. My Dr. said I could let her cry for 1 hr. at the most. I just felt too bad to let her cry any longer than 45 minutes. It was too much! I couldn't do it! What would you do at this point?
They are going to have to get used to the crib eventually, why not tonight? I too felt bad letting Tyler cry it out, but I also knew I needed sleep if I was going to take care of him. It took Tyler about a week of crying for about an hour to get him used to it. After that one week, we haven't had a problem.
ReplyDeleteUsually it takes about a week. Some babies get used to it after one night of crying it out for about an hour...but I think for the most part Mom's have to endure a little heart ache for about a week. For my kids white noise helps out a lot. A noisy fan, or static on a radio. If you have a baby monitor, you can turn the reciever on in their room and don't turn on the transmitter. That should give you static. Good luck. You'll make it through, and when she starts sleeping, you will feel SOOO much better and happy that you stuck with it. But, if she is happy in the swing, I'd just let her swing. Eden slept in a swing for quite a while.
ReplyDeleteThe best time I did it was with Cole at 7 months. The first night he cried 2 hours and Wes and I lay awake trying to support each other when the other wanted to go in. 2nd night was about an hour and third night was 15 minutes. Night #4 he slept through the night from then on. So worth it. I think they should be eating solids first before crying it out, but that was b/c I was nursing and knew breast-milk digest so quickly. I think formula fed babies can do it sooner since they don't empty so quickly. Definitely don't wait until she's too old. Tessa didn't sleep through the night one time until 16 months and then again, it was a three day battle, but she could scream "Mommy" and that broke my heart. Wish I had done it sooner with her, it was just easier to sleep with her and nurse then to deal with it.....at the time at least. Ah she's so cute, we miss her. Enjoy all the snuggling though cuz it doesn't last forever! I'd say to get her used to her crib before stopping the night crying, since you want her to be in a familiar place when she has to cry it out! Good luck, ah the joys of motherhood!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the darling baby! I think I would get her used to the crib asap. I would also recommend a book/website about teaching baby to sleep. The website is http://www.sleepsense.net Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI'm just to the point (Saige is 5 1/2 months old) that I've got to do something to get more sleep. I'm gearing up to let her cry it out this weekend. She wakes up like every 3-4 hours! AHH. I let Easton cry it out at 11 months and he could stand and cry for hours! Zach at 9 months, but with Saige, I just can't take it. Both my boys slept in their swings for like the first 6 months. I just recently (like 2 weeks ago) stopped swaddling Saige. I swaddled her looser and looser until I just finally stopped swaddling all together. I agree with your friends, the sooner you break the habit the easier for you and her. Good luck!
